Effective practices in guiding and counseling

Life skills refer to the abilities for adoptive and positive behaviors that enable us to deal

effectively with demand sand challenges in everyday life.

Education refers to the aggregate of all the processes by means of which a person develops

abilities, skills and attitudes.

Life skills education refers to a structural program of needs and outcomes based participatory

learning that aims to increase positive and adaptive behavior by assisting individuals to develop

and practice psycho-social skills that minimize risk factors and maximize protective factors.

Guiding and counselling in school

The purpose of the school counseling program is to impart specific skills and learning

opportunities in a pro – active, preventive manner ensuring all students can achieve school

success through academic, career and special development experience.

Counseling program targets four main areas of development.

(i) Academic – learning to learn

(ii) Career – learning to work

(iii) Personal/social – learning to live

(iv) Community involvement – learning to contribute

Ethical issues in counseling

Ethics – These are guidelines that are based on basic principles of the counselor.

Also defined that they are suggested standards of conduct based on a set of professional values

and moral decisions making regarding professional behavior.

Ethical issues – Refers to a problem or situation that requires a person or organization to choose

between alternatives that must be evaluated as right or wrong.
